First made available in 2008, Nike’s Flywire is a revolutionary thread that has been featured in its shoes line from then on. Made of Vectran, Flywire considerably reduces the weight of the shoe. Vectran is a type of fiber that is thinner than the human hair, but extremely inexpensive. Also, it is highly tensile. It is because of these factors that it is even used by NASA! Traditionally, layers of material are used to make the top portion of the shoe. Instead, Nike decided to go with long embroidered stitches composed of lightweight fibers like Vectran. This allows Flywire to support the foot in the key points.

In fact, swimmers wearing the Arena X-Glide broke over 15 records in a time span of 3 days! It has become clear that the suit gives an unfair advantage to swimmers. The governing body FINA has decided to ban these suits. Phelps, it is to be noted, stuck to his Speedo.
