History of Olympics


The Olympics are the most coveted and internationally recognized sports event. The Olympics originated in the city of Olympia in ancient Greece, in the eighth century B.C. Pierre de Coubertin, a French pedagogue and historian was inspired by competitive sports and resurrected the modern Olympics. For this reason, he is considered to be the “father of the modern Olympics”. In his honor, the Pierre de Coubertin medal is awarded to an athlete who displays true sportsmanship by the international Olympics committee.
