Golf had its origins in 12th century Scotland, with shepherds knocking around stones into rabbit holes. As the game soon caught up with the rest of Europe, wooden balls (famously known as ‘featherie’) were uses until the 17th century. However they were expensive, not perfectly spherical, and rot under wet conditions. In the 20th century, 3-layer balls came into use. The innermost layer was a solid or liquid filled layer, then wrapped around with a rubber layer, covered by a thin outer dimpled shell.
